Abstract

796,961. Glass manufacture. GENERAL ELECTRIC CO., Ltd., ELLIS, R. W., LEE, W. S., OSBORNE, D. G. S. M., and WEBSTER, H. Oct. 15, 1956 [Sept. 30, 1955], No. 27938/55. Class 56. In the manufacture of an opal glass to have the composition in the range by weight per cent of SiO 2 , 62À0-66À5; R 2 O 3 (where R is Al+Fe) 4À2-4À7; Na 2 O, 12À2-14À2; K 2 O, 0À6-2À6; CaO, 5À5-6À5; ZnO, 6À0-8À0; F 2 , 4À7-5À4 and possibly a trace of As, the ingredients are introduced into a glass melting furnace at a temperature in the range of 1440‹-1460‹C., the material is then brought to a founding temperature in the range of 1390‹-1430‹C. over a period of 2-3 hours and maintained for a further 3¢-4 hours, when the temperature is reduced to 1115‹Œ 10‹C. over a period of approximately 1 hour giving a glass with a coefficient of thermal expansion in the range of 9À35-9À85 x 10<SP>-6</SP> cm./cm./‹C. Preferably three parts of batch of raw materials and five parts of cullet, by weight, are used and added to some glass retained in the furnace after a previous working. The glass is suitable for incandescent lamp bulbs of wall thickness 1-1À5 mm. The glass is maintained at the working temperature for 15 hours, 11 hours actual working, and the residue then raised to the filling temperature of 1440‹- 1460‹C. Specification 675,776 [Group V] is referred to.
