[Class 34 (ii)] In apparatus of the type in which the material to be dried descends in a drying structure over a series of superposed plates, being caused to fall from plate to plate by distributing devices, drying air or heated gases are discharged laterally into the structure from a laterally-combined chamber having one or more fans, the drying medium being repeatedly circulated through the structure before being gradually discharged. In the construction shown, the material to be dried, such as granular or powdered materials, enters the drying chamber a through an opening m, falling on to a plate b, and is transferred successively to the remaining plates by spreaders such as f, finally being discharged from the chamber. A second chamber a<1> is divided horizontally into compartments c each with a fan d and heating elements e. The fans circulate heated air or gases through the chamber a by way of apertures p, q. Curved apertured plates n and louvres o may be provided to distribute the gases which are discharged through an outlet k. Means may be provided for adjusting the temperature of the gases by the admission of fresh air. The spreaders f may be rotary or stationary depending upon whether the plates b are stationary or rotary.
