Abstract

444,268. Piston-packing. BOWMAN, G., 91A, Mora Road, and SMITH & SONS (MOTOR ACCESSORIES), Ltd., S., Cricklewood Works, both in Cricklewood, London. Oct. 4, 1934, No. 28482. [Class 122 (i)] In a non-metallic, cup leather type of packing for pistons, &c., the piston has a rigid, annular, retaining member engaged by the packing. One has a groove and the other a rib, and the packing is sprung into position and overlies the inwardly - facing wall o: the retaining - member. A cup washer assembly is shown applied to a hydraulic lifting jack. Telescopic parts 10, 11 are extended by fluid pressure and retracted by a spring 31. A retaining member 13 is secured to the part 10 and carries a resilient packing 14 engaging the part 11. The member 13 has a peripheral groove 15, an inwardly directed rib 16, and an inwardly directed shoulder 17. The annular soft rubber packing has a rib 18 engaging the recess 15 and extends around the rib 16 to the cylindrical part 11. In a modification, the member 13 has an annular rib 21, an external annular recess 22, and an inwardly directed groove 23. The rubber also extends upon the inner side of the member 13 locking it internally and externally.
