Abstract

752,324. Piston packing. SALANSKY. F. [Nov. 17, 1954], No. 33231/54. Class 122(1) A packing for the pneumatic-pressure operated piston 4 of -a brake cylinder 1 is made of elastic resilient material, for example synthetic rubber, and comprises an annular portion engaging the piston and connected by an integral radial flange 13 to a peripheral flange 11 shaped so that its end portion adjacent the cylinder pressure head 2 engages the cylinder wall as a sealing lip 12 whilst the remainder of the flange, which includes at least one grease groove 15 on its outer surface, forms with the cylinder wall a positive annular clearance space 17 open towards the non-pressure head of the cylinder, the resilience of the packing being such that on application of pneumatic pressure the packing is deformed only sufficiently to partially diminish the space 17. The flange 11 is, preferably provided with an axial extension 18 on the non-pressure side of the flange 13. The packing comprises a cup portion 6 which completely covers the pressure face of the piston and has a bead 8 engaged in a groove 7 in the piston. In a modification, the packing is sprung over a circumferential recess in the piston and the end of the extension 18 is turned radially inwards to fit in a circumferential groove in the piston.
