[Classes 54 and 135] In a gas meter A of the movable diaphragm type having four diaphragm chambers A<1>, A<2>, A<3>, A<4>, the valve means D, which are of the kind having a valve member E, Fig. 4, rotatable on a seat F having a central inlet or outlet port 7 surrounded by four distribution ports 1 ... 4 leading to the diaphragm chambers, are such that (1) the surface of the valve member E remote from the seat is wholly or substantially wholly exposed to the gas pressure within the valve chamber ; (2) each distribution port is fully open for the greater part of each revolution of the valve ; and (3) opposite distribution ports 2, 4 or 1, 3 are simultaneously completely closed in changing from admission to outlet or vice versa. The valve member E has an arcuate recess 9 constantly communicating with the port 7 and bounded by a rim 12, and two radial bearing parts 10 of the same width as the ports 1 ... 4 which are thus completely closed only momentarily. The valve member separates at any particular time the pair of ports supplying two of the diaphragm chambers from the other pair of ports which simultaneously allow gas to pass from the other two diaphragm chambers. The diaphragms rotate the valve through mechanism of a known type in the compartment C, Fig. 1.
