Abstract

Artificial resins are prepared by condensing formaldehyde with dicarboxylic acid amides of hydrazine, its substitution products or with the monothio-derivatives of these compounds and, if desired, in the presence of acid or alkaline catalysts. The products may be blended with resins derived from urea or thiourea and formaldehyde and may be used in the manufacture of lacquers and for impregnating wood and paper. The resins, with or without the addition of other resins, may also be used in the treatment of fabrics to produce various effects including stiffening, anti-creasing, and elastic finishes. In these treatments the resin, or mixture of resins, may be produced in the presence of the fibres. In examples: (1) hydrazodicarboxyl amide is condensed with formaldehyde in the presence of sulphuric acid or caustic soda and the neutralized product is made slightly acid and hardened with or without the addition of a resin described in Specification 439,270; (4) viscose artificial silk cr<\>zepe-de-chine or a mercerized cotton fabric is impregnated with a solution containing hydrazodicarboxylamide, urea, formaldehyde and formic acid preferably also containing, when the cotton fabric is treated, the substance known under the Registered Trade Mark "Leowil," and the fabric squeezed, dried and heated to yield a fabric with a soft elastic finish; (5) viscose artificial silk cr<\>zepe-de-chine is impregnated by a solution prepared by acidulating with formic acid a solution prepared from hydrazine hydrate, urea, formaldehyde and caustic soda and finished as in example 4; (6) viscose artificial silk cr<\>zepe-de-chine is impregnated with a solution containing hydrazine hydrate, thiourea, formaldehyde and caustic soda and finished as in example 4. Reference has been directed by the Comptroller to Specification 424,076.
