Abstract
<PICT:0439538/III/1> <PICT:0439538/III/2> Liquids or solutions such as sugar gelatine, sulphate, and sulphite lyes, &c. are inspissated, heated, or cooled by injecting or spraying the liquids, from a pressure feed container 13 through nozzles 6, into the open ends of vertical tubes 2 mounted in tube plates 3, 4, arranged in an evaporator or condenser casing 1, the pressure of the feed being such that the tube walls are covered by a thin layer of liquid from the bottom to the top. The tubes are externally heated by steam, or air-cooled. The treated liquid collects in an annular chamber 8 of a froth collector 10 and is recirculated to the evaporator or condenser by a pump 12. A suitable nozzle has a helical groove 14, Fig. 3, to impart a twist to the liquid jet. The nozzle may be arranged to project above its supporting plate, the discharge mouth 15 being so shaped as to produce a suction effect on any liquid collecting on the plate. A multi-stage plant may be used.
