Abstract

436,736. Absorption refrigerating systems. CARPMAEL, A., 24, Southampton Buildings, Chancery Lane, London.-(Ges. fur Drucktransformatoren Koenemann-Transformatoren Ges.; 170, Mullerstrasse, Berlin) April 25, 1934, No. 12491. [Class 29] In a continuous absorption refrigeration process in which the liquid absorption agent comprises one or more anhydrous. non-volatile inorganic salts and a liquid refrigerant, the proportions of the materials are such that the vapour pressure of the absorption liquid at 70‹ F. is lower than the vapour pressure of the refrigerant at 0‹ F., and the temperature difference between the evaporator for the refrigerant and the absorber amounts to 70‹ F. or more. Suitable salts comprise anhydrous perchloric acid salts of the alkali metals, metal halogenides such as zinc chloride or bromide, aluminium chloride, magnesium iodide, potassium bromide, lithium chloride ; other lithium salts, such as the nitrate, are also suitable. The refrigerant may comprise ammonia or amines. Ammonia vapour streams from a generator 1, supplied with lithium nitrate ammonia, at a pressure of 170lbs. per sq. in. and a temperature of 320‹ F., to a water-cooled condenser 3, from which the liquid ammonia proceeds to an evaporator 6 through a throttle valve 5. Refrigeration is effected at 58‹ F., and the ammonia vapour is absorbed in an absorber 8 at a temperature of 86‹ F. The ammonia-rich liquid is returned to the generator through a heat-exchanger 11 and a throttle valve 13 and the liquid poor in ammonia is returned to the absorber through the pipe line 14. A cooling water temperature of 68‹ F. may be used. If the latter corresponds to 104‹ F. the refrigeration temperature is raised to -4‹ F. In a modified plant using zinc chloride diammonia, the condenser and evaporator are connected in parallel across a heat - exchanger wherein ammonia escaping from the latter is reheated by ammonia coming from the generator, before being absorbed in the absorber. The latter absorbs at such a high temperature that the heat of absorption may be utilized in a separate vessel for the production of pressure steam. An ammonia vapour turbine may be arranged in parallel with the plant to regulate the load. Reference has been directed by the Comptroller to Specification 358,844.
