[Class 130] Filter tips or filter-tip fillings are produced by rolling one or more layers of strip material into a spiral formation in cross-section around a central core. The core may consist of filtering, absorbent, porous, or permeable material, such as cotton wool, absorbent paper, china clay, or silica gel, or may be impermeable to the passage of smoke, whilst the strip material may be formed of crepe paper or of filtering or absorbent material such as crepe paper in combination with cotton wool, cellulose, silk, artificial silk, or textile material. In the construction shown, the core 1 is fed intermittently, between guides 6b, above a table 4 over which strip material 2 is fed intermittently. A length of the core is severed and pressed by a plunger 8 on to a strip of adhesive applied to the strip 2 by a reciprocating member 5. The strip is severed by a knife 9 and fed by a presser 11 over a guide 10 between a continuously rotating drum 12 and a fixed rolling member 13 which winds the strip spirally around the core. The rolled filling is ejected through an outlet 14, and may be enclosed in paper tubes or subdivided into lengths as described in Specification 413,655.
