[Class 130] A method of producing filter-tip or like composite cigarettes consists in applying together an ordinary cigarette 3 or a length of cigarette rod and a mouthpiece comprising a filter tip or other filling 1 enclosed in a tube 2 of paper and/or cork or other material, such tube projecting at one end of the filter tip or filling for the reception of the adjacent end of the cigarette. The projecting end may be provided with serrations 2b, Fig. 2, or slits 2<e>, Fig. 6, to enable it to be flared out to admit the end of the cigarette. The mouthpiece may be formed by wrapping around the tip 1 a length of paper, cork, &c., cut at 2<c>, Fig. 2, from a continuous strip ; or by applying mouthpiece fillings at spaced positions on a paper strip, forming the strip into a tube enclosing the spaced fillings and cutting the tube into lengths each containing a mouthpiece filling at one end. Double-length mouthpieces, to be subsequently bisected along the line 2<f>, may be formed as indicated in Fig. 6 by applying tips 1 at intervals to a strip 2b which is severed between the tips to leave a slitted or serrated edge. The mouthpiece filling may consist of tobacco, or of crepe paper with or without intervening layers of filtering or other material having a selective action. For assembling the mouthpieces and cigarettes, the mouthpieces are inserted in bores in an intermittently rotatable carrier 4, and positioned by means of a stop 4<a>. Each mouthpiece is brought into alignment with a rotating plunger 5 having a bevelled part 5<a> for flaring out the projecting part 2<a> of the tube. Moisture or adhesive from a wick 6 is applied to the interior of the tube by the plunger. The mouthpiece is subsequently brought into line with a guide 8 from which a cigarette 3 is fed by rollers 9, so that the cigarette enters the projecting part 2<a> of the tube 2 and the cigarette and mouthpiece are discharged through the bore, which closes the flared part of the tube around the cigarette. In a modification, Fig. 10, instead of flaring the part 2<a> of the tube, the ends of the cigarettes are pressed to a tapered form by the recessed end 10<a> of a plunger 10 while the cigarettes are located in bores in an intermittently rotated carrier 12, from which they are ejected by a plunger 11 into engagement with the feed rollers 9. In further modifications, (1) rollers, brushes, &c., are used for pressing, the projecting part of the mouthpiece tube into engagement with the cigarette ; (2) cigarettes are simultaneously applied to the opposite ends of a double-length mouthpiece which is afterwards bisected; (3) the mouthpiece is ejected from a chamber in a drum or carrier into engagement with the end of a cigarette held in a chamber in the same or a similar drum or carrier, the projecting part of the tube being pressed into engagement with the cigarette by rollers, brushes, &c. ; (4) the mouthpiece and cigarette are moved towards each other in chambers in one or more drums or carriers.
