[Class 130] A continuous tobacco filling is cut at spaced positions while closely confined, and spaces for the reception of filter tips or other insertions are formed by removing the subdivided parts of the filling. The continuous tobacco filling 1 is fed by compression wheels 3, 4 into a guide tube 5, and is retained in a circumferential groove 6<a> in the segmental rim of a rotatable wheel 6 by a fixed guide 7 until it is delivered on to a continuous paper strip 9. Tobacco cutting and removing devices are associated with each of the transverse slots between the segments of the rim, and each comprises a cam-actuated arm 12 having at the outer end side walls 12<c> with inclined cutting-edges which sever the tobacco, and a transversely-extending blade 12b which, with the side walls 12<c>, forms a scoop for removing the severed filling to a place where it is removed by a suction nozzle 21. The blade 12b may have its inner face inclined to apply increased compression to the tobacco filling before or during cutting. Filter tips 20 or the like are fed by a plunger 18 through a guide 17<a> into grooves 12a in the outer ends of the arms 12, coinciding with the circumferential groove 6<a>, and are retained by suction in the grooves 12<a>, until deposited on the paper 9. The suction is transmitted through a bore 12<f> in the arm 12 and through a hollow pin 13 and passages 6d to a bore 19<a> in a fixed spindle 19 connected to a suction pipe. The composite filling on the paper 9 is formed into a rod and cut to produce cigarettes each containing a length of tobacco and a filter tip either at the mouthpiece end or at an intermediate position, and the tips may be formed from crÛpe paper with or without intermediate layers of filtering-material or tufts of cotton wool, or from a different kind of tobacco. In modifications, (1) the means for applying filter tips in the spaces formed in the tobacco filling are omitted, and the continuous rod, after it is formed, is cut into lengths to form cigarettes having hollow mouthpieces into which filter tips are inserted, and (2) the continuous tobacco filling is retained in the groove 6<a> by the paper itself and/or by an endless belt.
