Abstract

435,406. Machines for working land. BROWN, G., 3, Suffolk Road, Barnes, London, GRAY, C. D., The Divots, Rosemount Road, Richmond Hill, BROWNE, J. COLLIS-, Monteagle, Godalming, both in Surrey, and COLE, A. H. P., Stanmore Hill Works, Stanmore, Middlesex. March 22, 1934, No. 9497/33. [Class 6 (i)] In a machine for piercing turf &c. for aerating, cultivating, and fertilizing purposes comprising a frame, a reciprocating member carrying prongs or the like and arranged so that it may have relative movement with respect to the frame during progression of the latter, and means for restoring the reciprocating member to its normal position when the prongs &c. are withdrawn from the ground, the prongs are guided vertically into the ground by sliding within a guide forming part of a shoe or cage which is reciprocated or oscillated so as to be pressed into contact with the ground to prevent the ground from being torn or raised when the prongs are withdrawn from it. The machine may be mounted on a front wheel 2 and rear wheels 3, the front wheel being driven from an engine 16 by belt gearing, and handles 4 being provided. The prongs 30 are carried by a plunger member 29 sliding through a guide 31 on a shoe or cage 32, the lower parts of which form guides for the prongs. The plunger 29 is reciprocated by a connecting-rod 28 and a crank 27 connecting two flywheels 26 on a shaft 24 driven by belt gearing from the engine 16. The shoe 32 is carried by links 33 pivotally connected to pivoted rocker arms 35 which are connected together by a bar 36. When the prongs 30 have entered the ground continued onward movement of the machine causes the links 33 to lower the shoe 32 on to the ground. The shoe is raised as the prongs leave the ground by engagement of a cam 39 on the shaft 24 with a projection 37 on the bar 36. The shoe is finally returned into its initial forward position by engagement of the cam 39 with an extension 40 of one of the links 33. The crank 27 may be adjustable to regulate the depth of work. A clutch may be provided to disengage the drive of the turf-piercing mechanism.
