[Class 38 (v)] [See also Group XIII] In the compensated thermal relay described in the parent Specification the operative bimetallic strip is shunted by a member having any desired temperature coefficient characteristics. As shown in Figs. 3 and 4 the operative bimetallic strip L<1> is placed immediately above a shunting strip S of identical shape, the operating current passing through parallel circuits comprising the two anchored limbs of both strips. As the strip L<1> is immediately above the strip S, heat produced by passage of current through the latter is communicated directly to the strip L<1> and produces a rapid action of the relay. Varying operating characteristics of the relay may be obtained by making the strip S of positive, negative or zero resistancetemperature coefficient material. The free end of the strip L<1> carries a contact immediately below a co-operating contact on a relatively fixed but adjustable compensating strip. C which is mounted at an angle to the strips L<1>, S so as not to be affected by heat rising from the latter.
