[Class 83 (iv)] Printing-types having aligning marks, either raised or recessed, for facilitating assembly on typelevers &c. are stamped by type punches on which the marker element has been formed by stamping. A gauge shown in Fig. 6 is first prepared, consisting of a cylindrical sleeve 1 in which is fitted a matrix 2 having a plane aligning-face and a recessed marker element 3, and a packing-piece 4 having a corresponding aligning-face 4<a> extending above the matrix. A cylindrical punch 5, Fig. 2, with a corresponding aligning-face 5<a>, is fitted accurately into the gauge, and then its end face 5<b> is milled off to leave a raised portion 5<c> in gauged position to form a raised marker by repeated pressure in the gauge against the matrix 2 ; if the matrix element 3 is raised, it is only necessary to mill the face 5<b> smooth. Finally, the letter matrices are engraved on the punch 5, using the aligning-face 5<a> to determine the type base line. An arc-shaped aligning-mark may be obtained by using an annular recess in the matrix ; in this case the packing-piece may be loosely inserted in the gauge above the matrix, so that all parts of the annular recess can be utilized in turn; further, an aligning-face on the punch can be dispensed with, the cylindrical surface of the punch then serving as an aligning-edge in relation to the annular recess.
