Abstract

434,366. Creasing, slotting, and printing on carton &c. blanks. SWIFT, G. W., Bordentown, New Jersey, U.S.A. March 26, 1934, No. 9388. Convention date, May 3, 1933. [Classes 100 (i) and 100 (ii)] [See also Group VIII] Creasing; feeding sheets.-In a machine for creasing and slotting carton or like blanks, the feeding, creasing, and slotting mechanisms A, B have positively geared connections which can be relatively adjusted by the aid of suitable pointers and scales for operating on different size blanks, the feeding mechanism comprising endless conveyer chains with uniformly-spaced pusher bars, the spacing between successive bars being equal to the distance between the creasing mechanism and the nearest operative pusher bar, in predetermined initial positions prior to adjustment. Printing-units C, D and a longitudinal creasing unit F are also provided, and the units A, C, F are mounted on roller-carriages so that they can be moved away from the creasing and slotting mechanism B. The machine is driven from a shaft 41, Fig. 16, geared to the lower shaft 6, Fig. 4, of the transverse-creasing cylinders which have interengaging gears. One pair of coacting creasers 17, 18 are fixed to the shafts 6, 9, but the other pair 21, 22 are carried by plates 19, 20 which are adjustable circumferentially by means of bolts 23 having tapered heads slidable in circumferential slots in the shafts. Interengaging gears 26, 27 fixed to the plates 19, 20 but otherwise free on the shafts 6, 9 keep the members 21, 22 in register with one another. A toothed sector 39 can be lowered by a hand wheel 34 to lock the gears 26, 27 against movement when the distance between the pairs of creasers is being adjusted. For this purpose, the shaft 41 is turned by a hand wheel until a mark on the gear 27 coincides with a mark on the framing which indicates the engaging position of the members 21, 22. The sectors 39 are then lowered to locking position, and the bolts 23 released. The shafts 6, 9 can then be turned by the shaft 41 until the distance between the creasers 17, 21 equals the distance b between the creases b<1>, b<2> in the blanks, Fig. 21, which is indicated by a fixed mark 48 on a scale 43<a> on the gear 43 on the shaft 6. A gear on the shaft 9 drives, through a gear train, a gearwheel 115 which is freely mounted on the driving shaft 96 of endless chains 93 carrying the pusher-members 99 by means of which the blanks are fed into the machine. Fixed to the shaft 96 is a hand wheel 117 which is adjustably fixed to a disc 116 integral with the gear 115 by means of bolts 119 with heads engaging slots in the disc 116. The gearing is such that each pusher 99 moves a distance equal to the distance between pairs of pushers 99 and to the circumferential movement of the creasers for each revolution of the creaser-shafts 6, 9. Also, when the pointers 121, Fig. 18, 6<a>, Fig. 16, on the frame point to the zero of the scale 116a on the disc 116 and to a mark 49a on a gear 51 respectively, and a mark on the hand wheel 117 registers with the zero of the scale 116, the fixed creasers are in register and the nearest operative pusher is spaced from the fixed creasers a distance equal to the distance between two pushers. Prior to the coupling together of the feeding and creasing units, the creasers are rotated in a forward direction through a distance corresponding to "a+b," Fig. 21, from the zero position, and this sets the feeding and creasing mechanisms to give the required creases b<1>, b2 when they are recoupled. Slotting-apparatus.-The slotting-mechanism for making the slots a<1>, c<1> in the blanks comprises fixed slotting blades 75 capable of slight adjustment and adjustable slotting blades 75a mounted in a cylinder 74 by means of bolts 77 engaging T-section slots 76 in the cylinder. Co-operating with the blades are slotted members 68, 72 mounted by means of bolts 70 in a somewhat similar mannei on a cylinder 63. The cylinders 63, 74 are secured to shafts 60, 53a by keys 65, 80 fixed to the shafts and set-screws 66, 82 allowing of axial adjustment, and the shafts are geared together and to the gear 51 on the shaft 6 so that the adjustment of the fixed creasers automatically adjusts the fixed slotters 68, 75 to the required setting. The slotters 72, 75a are adjusted by slackening the bolts 77 and moving them until scales 63a, 74a on the cylinders 63, 74 indicate the distance b. To facilitate axial adjustment of the slotters, the key 80 is formed on one radial face as a rack 81, and the cylinder 74 has a radial hole 85 for the insertion of a handle with a gear for engaging the rack, so that by turning the handle the slotters can be adjusted axially. Stripper fingers 90 slidably carried on a transverse bar 87 engage both sides of the slotters 75, 75a. Rotary printing-machines.-A gear 52, Fig. 16, on the shaft 53<a> drives the printing-machines through gears 122, 137 freely mounted on the shafts 123, 138 of the impression cylinders which are adjustably coupled thereto by bolt-and-slot connections 124, 127, the impression and printing cylinders being coupled together by interengaging gears. Lugs 145 and notched plates 145, 146 are mounted on the gears 52, 122, 137 in order that the units B, C, D can be coupled correctly in predetermined position after they have been separated. The required adjustment of the printing-machines is obtained by slackening the bolts 127 and turning the shafts of the printing-machines until scales 128, 128a give the required readings. Specifications 165,949, [Class 100 (ii)], and 166,091, [Class 100 (i)], are referred to.
