Abstract

Saturated ketones containing a higher number of carbon atoms are produced by treating secondary alcohols with dehydrogenating catalysts such as copper, silver, zinc, cadmium, iron, cobalt and nickel or their oxides and preferably containing also a dehydrogenating oxide catalyst such as an oxide of chromium, aluminium, thorium, vanadium, tungsten, molybdenum, or uranium, and the two components may be chemically combined. Suitable catalysts are described in Specifications 272,555, 301,806, and 313,575, [all in Class 2 (iii)]. The temperature of the reaction may be 200--500 DEG C. and the pressure 2--15 atmospheres. In an example, isopropyl alcohol vapour is passed over a zinc-copper-cadmium chromite catalyst at 357 DEG C. and 100 lb. pressure, the product containing methyl isobutyl ketone, acetone, and higher boiling oils. Other initial materials mentioned are secondary butanol, diethyl carbinol, methyl propylcarbinol, and methyl isopropyl carbinol.
