433,633. Electrolytic furnaces. DU PONT DE NEMOURS & CO., E. I., Wilmington, Delaware, U.S.A. Feb. 19, 1934, No. 5423. Convention date, Feb. 17, 1933. [Class 39 (iii)] [See also Group XXXVI] In the electrolysis of a fused salt mixture in a cell comprising narrowly spaced electrodes of large area, separation of undesired solid metal is avoided by artificially increasing the rate of circulation of the electrolyte between the electrodes. Production of sodium from a mixture of sodium chloride and calcium chloride is referred to. The increased rate of circulation may be produced by using a cylindrical cathode 10 having horizontal or inclined perforations and surrounding a central anode 2. The perforations may be formed alternatively or additionally in the anode. Other forms of cathode consist in a series of vertically spaced horizontal rings, a helical or woven structure, or a steel grating. Alternatively or additionally to the induced circulation, a positive circulation may be effected by a number of gas lift pumps comprising gas supply tubes 12 arranged in openended tubes 11 the tubes being bent as shown.
