Abstract

Moulded articles comprising masticated rubber or the like compositions, provided with a superficial coating of rubber or the like deposited from aqueous dispersions thereof are produced by treating the whole or a part of the moulding surface of a mould with one or more of the aqueous dispersions, solidifying the resulting coating, introducing the masticated rubber composition into the mould, moulding the composition and vulcanizing the whole under pressure in the mould. The superficial coating of rubber may be for protective or decorative purposes; the process may be applied to the manufacture of floor covering material, conveyer belts, tyre covers &c., provided on their surface with lettering, distinguishing marks &c. The aqueous dispersions may be natural or artificial, they may be coloured and may contain wetting agents, such as soaps and sulphonic acids, and material capable of increasing the viscosity of the dispersion such as sodium silicate. The dispersion may be sprayed or painted or spread on the moulding surface if desired with the interposition of a suitable stencil; alternatively the mould may be merely filled with a dispersion and then emptied leaving a thin film of dispersion over the whole surface. The coating is then dried in air which may be warmed; the operation may be repeated until the desired thickness is obtained. The mould may be provided with indented or engraved designs which may be filled with the aqueous dispersions. The moulded articles may be provided with fibrous, fabric or other backings or inserts.
