Abstract
Non-resinous dicarboxylic acid esters of polyhydroxy compounds having only one of the carboxylic groups esterified, are prepared by reacting upon the polyhydroxy compound with an anhydride of a dicarboxylic acid in the presence of a tertiary base in the proportion of one molecule of base per molecule of anhydride. Suitable tertiary bases include pyridine, quinoline, a -picoline, dialkylaniline, hexahydrodialkylaniline, dimethyl - n - hexylamine and iso - amyldiethylamine and suitable dicarboxylic acid anhydrides include the anhydrides of phthalic, succinic, diglycollic and glutaric acids and other dicarboxylic acid whether aliphatic or aromatic, saturated or unsaturated, substituted or unsubstituted. In examples ethylene glycol is esterified with phthalic anhydride in the presence of pyridine, or quinoline or with succinic anhydride in the presence of pyridine or hydroquinone or glycerol is esterified with phthalic anhydride in the presence of pyridine. The products may be esterified with monohydric alcohols such as methyl or ethyl alcohol preferably in the presence of an esterifying catalyst such as dry hydrogen chloride to yield mixed esters such as glycerol trimethyl triphthalate, ethylene glycol dimethyl diphthalate, hydroquinone diethyl diphthalate, glycerol trimethyl succinate, ethylene glycol diethyl diphthalate, or hydroquinone dimethyl disuccinate. The mixed esters are suitable plasticizers for cellulose esters and in examples (1) a film is prepared from a solution of cellulose acetate in acetone containing hydroquinone diethyl diphthalate; a moulding composition from cellulose acetate and ethylene glycol dimethyl diphthalate; a paste suitable for extrusion and the manufacture of rods from cellulose acetate, ethyl alcohol, acetone and ethylene glycol diethyl disuccinate; and artificial leather from cloth coated with a solution of cellulose acetate propionate in a mixture of ethylene chloride and methyl alcohol containing pigmented glycerol trimethyl triphthalate. Specification 316,324, [Class 2 (iii)], is referred to. The Specification as open to inspection under Sect. 91 refers also to the esterification of the acid esters with cellulose or cellulose esters such as cellulose acetate or aceto-propionate to yield mixed esters suitable for use in moulding compositions. The mixed esters of dicarboxylic acids, polyhydroxy compounds and monohydric alcohol may also be prepared by reacting upon an acid monobasic alcohol ester of a dicarboxylic acid with a polyhydroxy compound such as interacting ethylene glycol with ethyl acid phthalate. This subject-matter does not appear in the Specification as accepted.
