Abstract
Di- and tetra-esters of terephthalamide of the general formula <FORM:0671141/IV (a)/1> in which R is hydrogen or -C2H4-OOC-R11 and R1 is -OOC-R11, R11 being a lower alkyl group, may be used as plasticizers and coating agents for cellulosic films and sheets such as of regenerated cellulose, cellulose acetate and cellulose nitrate. The b -hydroxyethyl derivatives of the above general formula, where R is hydrogen or a hydroxyethyl group and R1 is a hydroxy group, may be condensed with dibasic acids to produce fibres and fibre-forming polymeric materials.ALSO:The invention comprises terephthalamides of the general formula <FORM:0671141/IV (b)/1> where R is hydrogen, hydroxyethyl or -C2H4.OOC.R11 and R1 is hydroxyl or -OOC.R11, in which R11 is a lower alkyl group; and their preparation by heating a mixture of a terephthalic acid ester and mono-or di-ethanolamine in ethyl alcohol, and if desired esterifying the N,N1-bis (or tetra)-(b -hydroxyethyl)-terephthalamide with a lower aliphatic acid. Examples are given of the preparation of N,N1 - bis - (b - hydroxyethyl)-terephthalamide and its diacetate and dipropionate; N,N1 - tetra - (b - hydroxyethyl) - terephthalamide and its tetra-acetate.
