Abstract

428,311. Typewriters. ROYAL TYPEWRITER CO., Inc., 2, Park Avenue, New York, U.S.A.-(Assignees of Dowd, B. J. ; 385, North Quaker Lane, West Hartford, Connecticut, U.S.A.) Dec. 27, 1933, No. 36422. Convention date, Dec. 30, 1932. [Class 100 (iv)] [See also Group XXII] Margin stops.-A stop comprises a frame, a longitudinally movable holding-latch mounted thereon, and guidefingers and a tail adapted to co - operate for guiding the latch. The left - hand margin stop X, Figs. 1 and 2, slides on a stop-rack 7, on the carriage 5 and contacts with a centrestop 10, mounted on the frame-work. The stop comprises a s h e e tmetal frame a, to which is pivoted a latch c by means of a spring d, Fig. 8 through which passes a screw 19. The stop is provided with a cam-member e, having two upstanding fingers 27 between which passes a tail 17 on the latch c. The member e is adjustably mounted on the frame by a screw 28 and slot 25 and is guided by lugs 26. A pointer f, arranged over a scale 9 on the front of the rack 7, is adjustably mounted on the stop. The frame is provided with a centre-stop camming-lug 13. The screw 19 passes through a slot 20 in the latch c so that, when the latch is depressed by a finger-piece 14, to disengage its nose 15 from the rack teeth, it is simultaneously slidden longitudinally relatively to the frame by the interaction of its shoulders 17<a> and the cam-fingers 27. The latch is guided in this movement by depending lugs 16, and by the fingers 27 and tail 17. The stop may then be pushed along the rack 7 until a screw 12 mounted in a spreaded collar 11 on the frame engages with the centre-stop 10. The latch is then released to engage the rack and, due to the previous sliding movement, the screw 12 is set a predetermined distance away from the centre-stop. The frame a for the stop is manufactured from a blank i, Fig. 9, by a series of bending opertions which may be performed on a power press. The blank i is first bent at rightangles along the lines 38, 39, 40, the end of the long arm 36 is bent slightly outwards, and the arm 37 is bent inwards along the line 37<a>, the arm 36 is bent completely round to form a loop, the arms 34, 35 are bent upwards along the lines 44, the loop is bent backwards first about the line 48 and then the line 49, the camming lug 13 is bent upwards, and finally the loop is brazed to the side of the box-like frame thus formed and is internally threaded to receive the screw 12, as shown in Fig. 8. Specification 428,330, which describes a right-hand stop, is referred to.
