[Class 100 (i)] In a sheet-feeding device of the kind in which sheets are separated from a fanned-out pile 16 by means of a rotating suction roller 21, and the pile is advanced by a band 19 driven by means under control of the advanced position of the pile, the pile-advancing means comprises a feeler 33 which is moved by the pile to close a nozzle 39 in a suction tube 37 connected to a cylinder in which works a spring-controlled piston 45 adapted to arrest the pile-advancing means in a manner such as is described in Specification 371,615. The band 19 is driven by gearing from a ratchet 63 operated by a pawl 9 on a spring-controlled arm 8 carried by a lever 5 which is oscillated on a shaft 6 by means of a crank and pitman 4. A cam disc 50 normally moves with the arm 5, and a recess in this disc engages a roller 10 on the arm 8 and permits engage ment of the pawl 9 with the ratchet 53. When the feeler 33 is acted on by the front edge of the pile and the nozzle 39 is closed, the piston 45 operates a spring catch 47 and the cam disc 50 is arrested thus causing the pawl 9 to be disengaged from its ratchet. A washer 40 is fitted to the nozzle 39 to ensure a tight closing. The feeler spring 33 is automatically adjusted in position in accordance with the position of the suction roller 21 which is mounted in a spring-controlled lever 24 adjustable by a screw 27. The arm 24 is connected by a link and lever to parallel links which support the nozzle conduit 37.
