Abstract
A mixture of nonyl-, undecyl-, tridecyl-, pentadecyl- (oxyphenyl) ketones is obtained by condensing phenol with a mixture of the acid chlorides of lauric, capric, myristic, and palmitic acids in the presence of aluminium chloride &c. Undecyl- (oxyphenyl) ketone may be made by esterifying lauric acid and phenol and then rearranging the ester by known methods. Isomeric dodecyl phenols are obtained by reducing undecyl- (oxyphenyl) ketone in an acid medium by means of zinc.ALSO:Soaps, shaving creams, cosmetic preparations, skin creams, floor and other wax-containing polishes are improved and rendered disinfectant by the addition of compounds comprising an oxyaryl group directly connected by a carbon bond (--CH2--, or --CO--) with an hydroaromatic or aliphatic residue containing at least six carbon atoms. Suitable compounds are the isomeric dodecyl phenols and cresols, the corresponding decyl and p tetradecyl compounds, oxyphenyl- or oxytolyl-undecyl ketones, and the corresponding nonyl, tridecyl and pentadecyl bodies and their mixtures. A mixture of nonyl-, undecyl-, tridecyl-, pentadecyl- (oxyphenyl) ketones is obtained by condensing phenol with a mixture of the acid chlorides of capric, lauric, myristic and palmitic acids in the presence of aluminium chloride &c. Undecyl-(oxyphenyl)-ketone is obtained by esterifying lauric acid with phenol and then re-arranging the ester by known methods. Isomeric dodecyl phenols are obtained by reducing undecyl-(oxyphenyl)-ketone in an acid medium by means of zinc. The Specification as open to inspection under Sect. 91 refers to the use of the above compounds in pomades and disinfectants. This subject-matter does not appear in the Specification as accepted.ALSO:Cosmetics and the like are rendered disinfectant by the addition of compounds comprising an oxyaryl group directly connected by a carbon bond (-CH2-n-CO-) with an hydroaromatic or aliphatic residue containing at least six carbon atoms. Suitable compounds are the isomeric dodecyl phenols and cresols, the corresponding dodecyl and tetradecyl compounds, oxyphenyl- or oxytolyl-undecyl ketones and the corresponding nonyl, tridecyl and pentadecyl bodies and their mixtures. The Specification as open to inspection under Sect. 91 refers to the use of these compounds as disinfectants generally. This subject-matter does not appear in the Specification as accepted.
