427,143. Grooving tyre treads. TECALEMIT SOC. ANON., 18, Rue Brunel, Paris. April 9, 1934, No. 10724. Convention date, June 14, 1933. [Class 31 (i)] A machine for cutting transverse grooves in the treads of tyres while on the vehicle or dismounted, consists of a milling cutter disc 23 which rotates and is reciprocated across the tread, and the tyre is given a step-by-step rotation after each stroke of the cutter. The tyre is pressed against and supported by an idle roller 6 and a ratchet-driven channelled roller 7. The cutter 23 and guide roller 24 which ensures a uniform depth of cut are mounted in a casing 25 which can pivot about ball bearings 26, 27 against the pull of a spring 28 so as to follow the curved face of the tyre. The main splined shaft 12 carries the traversing cutter carriage 15 and drives a sliding worm 13, worm wheel 14, and gears 20, 21 for rotating the cutter. A crank disc 32 is also driven by worm gearing on the end of the shaft 12 and the carriage 15 is reciprocated by a link 35 and lever 37, and is guided by a roller 18 and guides 19. The shaft of the crank disc 32 also drives a cam 33 which, through a lever 41, actuates a pawl 43 and ratchet 44 on the roller 7 to rotate the work two steps per revolution of the cam. The cutter may be slightly inclined to the plane of the tyre, and the machine may be mounted on a wheeled base.
