[Class 83 (iv)] In a shearing-machine the shearing-head is mounted on a vertical pivot to allow of making curved cuts. Rotary cutters 9, 10 are rotated from a gear 15 driven by an electromotor and mounted on a head 5 pivoted on a shaft 16 on a bogie 6. The head is swung by rotation of a hand wheel 21 and gear 20 engaging a fixed arcuate rack 19. The bogie wheels 7 are driven by the shaft 16 through to a slipping clutch on a shaft 34 from the gear 15. The work is clamped to a table 1 on wheels 3. A track 37 on the table houses a bowl 39 on screws 40 engaging half nuts 43 and rotated by splined woven wheels 44 from a hand wheel 45. The nuts 43 may be disengaged from the screws on depression of a pedal 51. In cutting a straight edge a gauge wire 59 is positioned over the cutting line by adjusting handwheel 45 and the cutters are rotated and travelled by the gear 15. In cutting a curve the machine is slewed by manipulation of hand wheel 21 to maintain the wire 59 tangent to the curve. In modifications the cutters may be freely mounted and may be pivoted or reciprocated. The work or the cutters may be stationary or movable. In a further modification a point on the plate is constrained to move in a straight line and is supported on castors to allow of the plate slewing in cutting or curved edge, Fig. 5 (not shown).
