[Class 146 (iii)] The propelling - pencil described in the parent Specification is modified by forming the clamping- ring 5 with a tubular extension 5<a> directed towards the cap and adapted to abut at its upper end against a stop for the clamping - ring, and also with a tubular extension 5<b> of reduced diameter directed towards the point, the clamping-surface 5<c> on this extension being thereby disposed within and close to the end of the pencil point. The upper end of the extension 5<a> is provided with a collar 7 against which bears a spring 6 for returning the clamping-ring after this has released the lead-clamping members 1. The members 1 are formed with an offset 3 directed towards the cap so that a rapid and complete release of the lead is ensured, and are conical at their front ends 2 ; the inside surface 14 at the point end is conical, and the clamping- surfaces 20 are connected to the widened part 21 by a conical surface 22. The step 11 on the clamping-ring co-operates with a step 12 in the point section to limit the forward movement of the ring, and the collar 7 engages a split member 8 fixed in the casing to limit the backward movement. The member 8 also engages a stop 16 to limit the backward movement of the lead-carrying tube 9 when the clamping-members 1 are empty, while the forward movement of the tube is limited by a stop 19 thereon engaging the surface 18. The clamping-members 1, 5 and other parts of the pencil may be of soft metal or alloy, such as copper, aluminium, brass, or German silver, and having a covering of a hard metal, such as nickel, chromium, tungsten, iridium, platinum, palladium, or molybdenum.
