[Class 100 (ii)] A multicolour proof press is constructed with a single impression cylinder 10, a plurality of plate cylinders 20 having plate clamps for securing the multi-colour plates 21 thereto in the same relative relationship as they will have on the newspaper press. The plates 21 are secured in accurate registered position by means of a fixed rear stop 26, a fixed side clamp which engages one bevelled edge of the plate 21, and a similar screw-actuated clamp for engaging the other side edge of the plate. As applied to the offset press shown, the impression cylinder 10 has a circumference equal to three times the length of the sheet to be printed, and coacts with two offset cylinders 40 of circumference equal to the length of two wheels, the cylinders 40 being arranged at a distance apart on the cylinder 10 of 120‹. A sheet fed to grippers 12 on the first revolution of the cylinder receives superimposed impressions from one half of the periphery of each offset cylinder and at a second rotation receives further offset impressions from the other part of the periphery of each offset cylinder. The resultant impression indicates if the plates have been cast accurately. The cylinders 20 are fitted with inking apparatus of different colours, and the whole machine is driven by hand or by a small motor. The grippers 12 are manually opened by means of a lever 13 and are closed by a spring 15.
