Abstract

A thread comprising a wire core and two opposite helical layers of cotton is impregnated, before or after weaving, with a wax, which may be subsequently removed by washing or by the use of solvents. In an example, the thread is run through a bath comprising about 35 per cent light carnauba wax, 15 per cent white paraffin wax and 50 per cent ordinary paraffin wax with a M.P. of about 130 DEG F. The bath is heated to about 220 DEG F., and the thread is wiped as it leaves the bath. Where flame resisting qualities are desired, the fibrous material may be impregnated with chlorinated naphthalene, or a compound containing oxidized stearine pitch.
