[Class 7 (vi)] In the valve mechanism of internal-combustion or other fluid-pressure engines, the lifting action of the cam is taken up in steps by springs arranged to be acted on in succession by a number of arms on the valveactuating rocker. The Figure shows a rocker shaft 1 formed with an arm 1 <A> acted on by the cam mechanism, an arm 1<C> acting on the valve fitted with the usual closing-spring, and other arms 1<B>, 1<D>, acting on separate buffer springs 4 which come into action successively with regard to each other and the valve spring. Either the valves or the buffers may be fitted with multiple springs arranged to come into action one after the other. The buffer springs 4 may be adjusted by nuts 7.
