Abstract

423,598. Actuating signals on trains and stopping trains. HUDD, A. E., c/o London Midland and Scottish Railway Co., Bow, London. Aug. 4, 1933, No. 21985. [Class 105] A warning signal and a braking on a train are given when a track magnet energizes magnetic collector plates on the locomotive to remove an armature from a detent lever holding up a spring-loaded plunger which maintains a brake control valve closed ; the opening movement of the valve automatically resets the spring- loaded plunger and detent. Soft iron magnetic collector plates are provided with polepieces 6 adapted to attract a resiliently mounted armature 71 an arm 14 of which then allows the arm 7 of a detent to move under the action of a spring-loaded plunger 11 having a wedge end engaging a roller on an arm 8 of the detent. The plunger 11 is mounted in a hollow stem 12 carried by a diaphragm 15 exposed to the vacuum system. The stem is formed on the head with a liftvalve ring 45 and has a port 44 in its cylindrical surface to co-operate in the manner of a sleeve valve with a fixed spigot member 42. When the pressure of the spring 13 is reduced by the release of the plunger 11 the valve 45 opens to admit atmosphere to the top of the diaphragm whereupon the stem 12 is forced fully down so that its extension 25 engages a lug 9 on the detent 7, 8 and resets the detent and the plunger 11. The sleeve valve port 44 is now open and admits atmosphere through the whistle 39, pipe 38, spigot member 42, and port 44 to the vacuum piping 41. The driver may cancel the signal and braking by operating a hand valve 47 which admits atmosphere to the underside of the diaphragm 15 which is thus balanced to allow the spring 13, now under full stress, to close the stem valves 44, 45. The driver must restore the hand valve 47 as otherwise the vacuum piping continues to be open to atmosphere at a port 48 of such valve. An apparatus for use with compressed air is also described.
