In a vacuum brake system for rail-car sets in which high vacuum release reservoirs are arranged to supplement the exhauster capacity so that it is necessary to use a large capacity value s controlled by the passenger's emergency lever t for allowing atmospheric air to flow in to operate the local release valve d, it is possible for the car to be stopped in a tunnel where it may be difficult to locate the position of the open valve. A double valve k, m is therefore provided, which when operated by a solenoid n energized by closure of a switch r, p by the train driver maintains valve m closed and causes the brakes to be temporarily released.
