Abstract

421,298. Organs &c. COMPTON, J. H., Chase Road, Willesden, London. Sept. 13, 1933, No. 25382. [Class 88 (ii)] Relates to enharmonic musical instruments. (a). A key sounds alternatively corresponding notes from two series which series are tuned to tempered scales but are of a slightly different pitch such that different notes from the two series produce a particular perfect interval, and also selects the alternative note to be sounded by a key at the distance of that interval. Fig. 1 (not shown) illustrates circuits whereby depression of an E key alone sounds a pipe in the first of two series, while simultaneous depression of a C key causes the E key then to sound a pipe in the second series. In Fig. 2 only one set of pipes is used, simultaneous depression of the C key with the E key causing the note E from pipe E<3> to be flattened by operation of the tuning device 6 from contact 5. Notes at other intervals may be similarly controlled. Fig. 3 (not shown) indicates the circuits by which, if a major third be selected as the interval, any C controls all the E's, any C# all the F's, and so on. Other series of pipes, tuned at other intervals, may be added, and controlled similarly. (b). In Fig. 4 (not shown), which is applicable also to the arrangement described in Specification 421,292 wherein a non-tempered scale is em. ployed, a key (say E) producing a normal and an alternative sound of different pitch, only produces the alternative sound when two or more keys (say A and C) are simultaneously operated.
