[Class 31 (i)] Relates to machines for trimming or cutting out workpieces, such as boot or shoe soles, of the kind described in Specifications 23396/06, [Class 31], and 1070/08, [Class 17], wherein a blank is clamped upon a pattern between which and a knife there is relative traversing movement during the operation of the machine in a path determined by the pattern to effect the trimming or cutting out. The machine is designed to avoid danger to the operator from the moving knife or its supporting mechanism when placing blanks into or removing them from the machine, and for this purpose the overhanging portion 1 of the machine frame, on a base portion of which the pattern is supported, extends downwardly and rearwardly directly behind the vertical axis of the rotary table or support 5, as viewed from the front of the machine and substantially at right-angles to the driving shaft. A horizontal work table 9 of substantial size extending on both sides of the portion 1 and above the knife 7 can thus be provided. A triangular portion 11 of the table 9 at the left-hand side is so situated that the hand of the operator reaching thereto is above the path of the knife and its supporting mechanism. A knife guard 51 is arranged in front of the knife edge 7 on a knife clamping member so as to move with the knife. The arrangement and construction according to the invention is described in relation to a machine as described in Specification 1070/08. The machine may be driven throughout its cycle at either of two speeds, or the speed may be varied at any time during its cycle by the operator by a twopart control lever 17, 27 on which the operator must keep his hand throughout the complete cycle of the machine to maintain the power operated mechanism in operation.
