[Class 17 (i).] Trimming.-The excess lasting allowance is trimmed from the shank of a lasted upper in a machine provided with a pair of cutters spaced away from each other for trimming the two edges simultaneously, and a plough which raises the lasting allowance from the insole and guides it to the cutters. The plough 32, Fig. 2, may be bolted to a rod 38 slidable in guides suspended by an eccentric 40 which is adjustable to raise or lower the plough. The shaft 38 is secured to the strap of an eccentric on a driven shaft 14 so that the plough is reciprocated in the line of the inseam and also moved vertically. A pair of rotary cutters, preferably saws, are bolted to shafts 22 driven by belts from a power shaft, the cutters being adjustable axiaily of their bearings, interchangeable spacing washers 31 of different thicknesses being inserted behind the cutter support. In a modification, the plough is guided to move in a straight line. A modified adjusting means for the cutter comprises a screw 62, Fig. 7, engaging a screw thread in a vertically-adjustable bracket 56, the screw moving axially with a bearing 60 in which rotates the shaft 222 carrying the circular saw 226. A driving pulley 66 and head 229 on a bolt securing the saw prevent the latter moving axially of its bearing. Preferably, each saw is 2¥ inches in diameter and rotates at 6500 R.P.M. Its thickness is À016 inches and it has about 120 teeth. The preferred peripheral operating speed is 11,500 to 15,000 teeth per second. The teeth are preferably symmetrical about the radii and have an angle at the apex of about 60‹.
