[Class 87 (i)] In apparatus for shaping clay which is rotated about a vertical axis during the manufacture of pottery, a skeleton profile cutting tool of the kind having a cutting edge made of wire or strip, lying substantially in the plane of the cut, is provided with a sheet guide 8 adjoining the back and following the contour of the cutting edge, for carrying away the cuttings. Slots 15 may be left behind those portions of the cutting edge which remove least material. The tool is lowered on to the clay by means of a handle 6, and when it has reached its lowest position, a recess may be formed in the clay by the projecting cutting edge 10 of a pivotable blade 11, the movement of which is limited by a slot and pin 13.
