Abstract

418,283. Deep - well pumps. BRIND, W. G., Imperial Reserve, Mafeking, South Africa. Jan. 17, 1933, No. 1528. Void [Abridged as open to inspection under Sect. 91 of the Acts, Aug. 7, 1933]. [Class 102 (i).] A deep-well pump comprises two pistons 30, 31, Fig. 4, connected by a rod 32 passing through a partition 7 containing valve mechanism, which distributes operating water or compressed air to the inner surfaces of the pistons. The outer ends of the cylinders are provided with valve boxes having suction valves 26, Figs. 4 and 8, and discharge valves 27. Each valve box comprises a chamber 54, which communicates with the cylinder space through axial passages 28 and with the discharge passages through lateral ports 29. The lower pump space 52, draws through a strainer 64 and discharges to an annular space 21, which communicates with an upper annular space 20 through a passage 19, Fig. 23, through the partition 7. The space 20 communicates with the rising main by means of a passage 47. Operating fluid is supplied, either direct to the partition 7 by a pipe outside the rising main, or by a pipe inside the rising main. In the latter case it passes through a port, not shown, in the upper cylinder head 3 to an annular space 4 and so to ports in the partition 7. The latter is provided with a semi-circular recess 15, Fig. 23, communicating with the upper cylinder space 13, and with a similar recess 16 communicating with the lower cylinder space 14. The recesses have ports 9, 10 for the admission of motive fluid, and exhaust ports 17, 18 to the passage 19. The ports are controlled by valves 11, 12, Fig. 28, of L-section, the valve 11 being in the recess 15 and the valve 12 in the recess 16. The valves are connected by a bridge piece 43 and are operated by an arm 42 on a sleeve 37, Fig. 27, the arm being grooved to engage a rib on the valve 11. The sleeve 37 has a slot which is engaged by a rib 81 inside a surrounding sleeve 36. The latter is connected by a spring 74 to an outer member 35 comprising upper and lower rings connected by an axial portion. A lug on the member 35 engages a helical slot 78, Fig. 26, in the interior of a stationary cam member 34, and a lug on the sleeve 36 engages an internal cam projection 79 in the member 34. The sleeves 35, 36 are moved downwards by the piston 31 and upwards by a frame 39, 40, 53 operated by the lower piston 30. On the upward movement the lugs on the members 35, 36 are drawn together by the action of the slot 78, thus putting the spring 74 in compression. When the lug on the sleeve 36 passes above the cam 79 the spring moves the lug to the left and on the downward stroke the lug moves along the left hand edge of the cam 79 and the spring 74 is put in tension. At the bottom of the stroke the spring moves the lug to the right. The oscillating movements of the sleeve 36 are communicated to the sleeve 37 and so to the valves 11, 12.
