Nov. 29, 1932, No. 33802. Void [Abridged as open to inspection under Sect. 91 of the Acts, June 2, 1933]. Drawings to Specification. [Class 39 (i).] In the manufacture of a photo-electric cathode, a foundation metal such as silver is oxidized by passing a glow discharge between the anode and cathode in oxygen, the cathode being connected with the negative terminal of its supply. Alkali metal is subsequently deposited on the oxidized surface. The envelope is heated to 350‹ C. during evacuation, oxygen is admitted at a pressure of 250-300 microns, and a glow discharge is passed, the voltage depending on the pressure of the oxygen. After caesium or rubidium has been admitted, the cell is heated to 275‹ C., excess metal is evacuated, argon at a pressure of 125 microns is admitted, and a glow discharge passed with the anode positive, as described in Specification 415,018.
