Abstract

414,380. Chimney tops ; sparkarresters. McDOWELL, C. H., 27, Bucking- ham Gate, London. Feb. 1, 1933, No. 3099. [Class 25.] A dust-catching device for use as a chimney attachment or cowl and of the type in which gases from the chimney flow to the atmosphere through a chamber of larger cross sectional area than the chimney, comprises a casing or chamber 1 with inlet and outlet tubes 5, 6 forming extensions of and having substantially the same cross-sectional area as the chimney flue 2, which tubes have their openings within the chamber spaced apart, with the outlet tube opening at or adjacent one end of the chamber and so arranged that the paths of the gases into and out of the chamber are at right angles to their general direction of flow in the chimney. Four forms of the device are shown in Figs. 1, 2, 3 and 6. The inlet opening 5 is preferably spaced from the bottom of the chamber to provide a quiescent section for the deposition of dust. When the invention is to be used mainly for preventing down-draught the free cross-sectional area of the chamber may be reduced somewhat and the bottom of the chamber may be open or perforated.
