Abstract
414,201. Discharge tubes. GENERAL ELECTRIC CO., Ltd., Magnet House, Kingsway, London, and RANDALL, J. T., c/o General Electric Co., Wembley, Middlesex. May 24, 1933, No. 15042. [Class 39 (i).] In a discharge tube, such as a lamp, which is adapted to be energized by alternating current, and is provided with thermionic main electrodes, heated independently of the discharge, and also with an auxiliary electrode placed near a main electrode and connected through a resistance either to the opposite main electrode or another auxiliary electrode adjacent thereto, means are provided whereby the auxiliary electrode can be heated independently of the discharge to facilitate degassing or to improve starting. The auxiliary electrode may consist of a tungsten spiral which surrounds a rod of barium oxide as described in Specification 344,497, and it may be heated by an element connected to a transformer. By this means it is stated that the pressure of a filling of neon can be reduced to 2 mms.
