Abstract
413,950. Thermionic cathodes. NAAMLOOZE VENNOOTSCHAP PHILIPS' GLOEILAMPENFABRIEKEN, 13D, Emmasingel, Eindhoven, Holland. Dec. 9, 1933, No. 34722. Convention date, Dec. 10, 1932. [Class 39 (i).] In oxide-coated cathodes, the coating, which is less than 0.1 mm, is applied to a metal or metal alloy having a thermal emissivity less than nickel. Copper, gold, silver or alloy of copper and gold may be used with a coating of barium oxide. Uneven temperature distribution in indirectly heated cathodes is prevented by greater heating at those parts which are more likely to cool ; the pitch of a helical heating wire may be decreased or where a cylindrical cathode is used the ends may be coned to bring them nearer the heating wire. In one construction a small rod of magnesium oxide is formed with two bores close to one another to receive a tungsten heating wire of hairpin shape. A thin copper sheath is placed on the rod, the sheath being applied either as a cylinder or by spraying the metal. The coating of barium oxide having a thickness of 0.02 m.m. is then made, and a leading-in wire is welded to the copper sheath which with the oxide forms the cathode.
