413,422. Variable-speed chain gearing. RAIMOND, A., 73, Rue Logier, St. Etienne, Loire, France. Feb. 23, 1933, No. 5487. [Class 80 (ii).] In variable-speed chair gearing for cycles, of the type in which the chain is adapted to be moved laterally into engagement with any one of a series of sprockets of different sizes on the wheel hub, a spring. urged chain-tensioning arm 20 having a guide sprocket 25 is pivotally mounted on a carrier 11, which is fitted with a freely - mounted chain-shifting sprocket 22 and is slidably but non- rotatably mounted on a sleeve 9 fixed to the cycle frame, as by nuts 10 engaging a bracket 7 on the chain stay. The carrier 11 is provided with a peg 13 passing through longitudinal slots 12 in the sleeve 9, and the sliding movements are effected by means of a cable 17 and a return spring 14. The cable 17 passes around a pulley 18 mounted in a bracket 19, carrying a tubular shank 15 fitting into a bore in the end of the sleeve 9. The arm 20 is acted on by a tension spring 27 connected to the cycle frame.
