Abstract
Guttapercha, balata, or mixtures are rendered non-thermoplastic after a time, by the incorporation therein of sulphur and an accelerator, and treatment to produce vulcanization without causing the gutta to become plastic. For example, 85 parts of gutta, 5 parts zinc oxide, 2 parts sulphur, 0,5 parts piperidine piperidyl dithio carbamate, and 0,2 parts of an anti-oxidant are mixed at a temperature not exceeding 55 DEG C., and kept at below 20 DEG C. until required. This can still be moulded after 24 hours but in a few days at room temperature or in 50 hours at a temperature gradually rising to 50 DEG C., it has changed into a hard non-thermoplastic mass. Sheets may be made of plies containing alternately sulphur and accelerator, or a mix containing sulphur may be moulded, and dipped into a solution of accelerator. For insulating conductors a film of accelerator may be applied to the wire, and the gutta mix extruded on to this.
