[Class 103 (v).] In a combined buffing and draw gear for railway &c. vehicles of the kind in which side buffers operate in conjunction with a continuous central drawgear equipped with buffing and draw springs, the latter springs are so arranged and associated with pivoted transverse levers that either on the occurrence of double-ended draw forces or double-end buffing forces the underframe is wholly or almost wholly relieved from the resultant stresses. According to the construction shown in Fig. 1, a divided draw-rod 48, 49 is employed so as to permit a certain amount of train slack and has pivoted to its ends the drawhooks 38, 39 and transverse levers 40, 41 which work in association with the buffer rods 36, 37. To allow a limited relative movement between the levers 40, 41 and the buffer stems, the levers work in slots in the stems terminating in stops 42-45. Each part of the draw-rod has a light springing arrangement 31-33 with a distance-piece 34 for the follower-plates 32, 33, while the inner ends of the rods are fitted with collars 26, 27 bearing against followerplates 24, 25, which are connected to the collars 26, 27 by rods 28, 29 and between which are interposed a spring 23 and distance-piece 30. When double-ended stresses occur in this arrangement, the follower plates 24, 25 approach and compress the spring 23, while each of the springs 31 is compressed by an amount corresponding to half the stroke of the spring 23. Some load is thus actually imparted to the underframe, but, by making the spring 31 of light construction, such load may be made relatively small. The provision of the springs 31 and the slots in the buffer stems furnish the requisite amount of train slack. Various other arrangements are described in which additional springs may be disposed around the buffer stems or the draw-hooks, and in which the main spring is located in a housing while the draw-rod springs may be replaced by friction springs or brakes.
