Abstract
410,496. Sewing-machines. BRITISH UNITED SHOE MACHINERY CO., Ltd., GOULDBOURN, J., KEALL, F. B., and KESTELL, T. A., Belgrave Road, Leicester. Oct. 11, 1932, No. 5818 /34. Divided on 410,463. [Class 112.] The invention relates to boot-sole sewing-machines of the general kind described in Specification 23478/10, [Class 112], and consists in high and low speed driving mechanism and lubricating mechanism for the machine described in Specification 410,463. The shuttle mechanism is the same as described in Specification 392,947 and the rotary take up as described in Specification 390,842. The operation of the high and low speed driving mechanism is as follows. Assuming the machine to be stopped and the driving belt connected to the pulley which is fast on the countershaft or motor to be running, the small pulley 165 is coupled to the driving member 177 on the countershaft and large pulley 169 on the main shaft is driven thereby. The small pulley 175 on the main shaft, driven by the engagement of the block 209 on the inner face of the large pulley 169 with one face of the recess 211 in the periphery of the disclike member 205 on which the large pulley is mounted and to which the small pulley is secured, will rotate idly the large pulley 171. The lever 299 will, in stopping the machine be raised by a cam on the main shaft 15 and will be held in its raised and right-hand position by the spring plunger 311. It will, through the rocking shaft at the rear of the machine, be holding the presser foot raised and the lower thread lock unlocked, the upper thread lock being also unlocked. The connections whereby this shaft raises the presser and opens the lower thread lock are described in Specification 410,463. When the treadle 17 is depressed, the cam 279 is swung upwardly and actuates the lever 289 to swing the lever 299 away from the cam to release the spring plunger 311 and allow the presser to drop on to the work. Upon further partial depression of the treadle, the upper end of the cam 279 engages the lower end of the screw 277 in the arm 275 the clutch lever 263 to disengage the hooked end thereof from the block 259 on the lower end of the lever 251 and allow the clutch to close and drive the machine at slow speed. Still further depression of the treadle raises the arm 270 still further till the latch 273 engages the small plate 295 on the cam lever 289 to move the driving member 177 out of engagement with the small pulley and into engagement with the large pulley, to drive the machine at high speed. Reverse movement of the treadle effects reverse operations, the machine being brought to rest at the same point in the machine cycle. Lubrication. For lubrication, there is provided an oil pump in the hollow arm 77 projecting from the sump. The pump consists of a bracket 137, Fig. 15, below the shaft 73 and a plunger 141 so that as the shaft 73 is rocked, the plunger is reciprocated to effect a force-feed lubrication through various apertures to various parts.
