[Classes 20 (ii), 20 (iv), and 107.] A temporary or permanent roadway or floor, or a road foundation or the like, comprises a plurality of trough-shaped units a which are hingedly interconnected at the lower edges of their downwardly depending flanges h. In the form shown, each unit is provided with an inturned beading a<3> and an outturned beading a<2> which interengage, as shown, with the beadings of adjacent units to form the hinged joint. When the units are laid on a foundation of a loose character, they embed themselves therein when subjected to pressure, and to hasten this embedding action the beading a<2> may be formed with a sharp lower edge. For permanent roads, the troughs are preferably filled, when in position, by liquid cement grouting which is injected through suitable holes in each unit. Longitudinally extending ribs a<2> assist in anchoring the units to the foundation soil and a further anchoring means is provided by an inverted L-shaped member c. In the case of permanent roads, a surfacing layer of sand, gravel, asphalt, or like granular or bituminous substance is laid on the assembled units, or alternatively, the top surface is formed by a metal plate secured to the units. The units are preferably arranged to break joint and the flanges h preferably slope, as shown to provide a key for the surfacing material. For temporary roads, the units may be provided with upstanding ribs to provide a non-skid surface, and may be made of rubber or metal.
