Abstract

367,766. Foundations for road and like pavings. BRAITHWAITE & CO. ENGINEERS, Ltd., TELFORD, J. C., Broad way Buildings, Westminster, and HINES, J., 27, Riverside Gardens, Barnes, London. Sept. 19, 1930, Nos. 28019, 36225, 36226, and 38307. [Classes 20 (iv) and 107.] Relates to foundations for road, aerodrome, yard, and like pavings, of the kind comprising upper and lower layers of metallic plates between which is sandwiched a cementitious substance, sand, or other suitable non-metallic material. According to the invention, the layers are spaced apart by means formed in or associated with the lower layer of plates. In one form, a road foundation comprises upper plates 10, Figs. 3 and 6, a cement concrete filling 14, and lower plates 11, the plates of each layer being arranged in staggered formation and riveted, bolted, or welded together. The lower plates 11 are formed with upstanding part-spherical bosses 12 which serve to space the layers apart. The plates 10 are substantially flat and are shown interconnected along their edges by quick-threaded screws 1. Some of these screws engage also with holes 16 in the bosses and thereby serve to interconnect the layers. The lower plates 11 are formed along their lateral edges with grooves 27, 28, the groove 27 of one plate being adapted to nest within the groove 28 of an adjacent plate. A central groove 29 is also provided in each plate 11 and is adapted to receive at its ends the ends of the grooves 27, 28, of adjacent plates in a longitudinal direction. The plates 10 at the side of the road are bent, as shown, at 31, 32, to retain the filling material and form a bed for the kerbing. A downwardly, or alternatively, an upwardly extending flange may also be provided on the adjacent edges of the plates 11. In a modification, the edging comprises an angle-section plate which is secured to the plate 10. The plates 11 may be assembled on a prepared road bed. The cementitious material, or the like, is then applied, and the plates 10 then secured in position. Alternatively, the plates may be connected together and filled with the cementitious material away from the site. In another process, the plates are connected together on the prepared road bed and the cementitious material is poured in between them. In the last-described process, the kerb flange construction prevents the spreading of the material in a lateral direction. The plated foundation may be used to support an upper layer of road material, such as bituminous macadam, stone setts, rubber, or the like. According to a modified construction, the apex of each boss 12 is punched at 19a, Fig. 4, to provide an upstanding tongue 19 which is adapted to project through a hole in the upper layer. The layers are rigidly secured together by spreading these tongues around the margins of the holes. In another modification, the lower plates are formed with projections or, alternatively, dished depressions 25, Fig. 5, which are each adapted to receive a precast concrete block 23. The block and the plates 10, 11 are drilled to receive a bolt 22. The plates of the top layer, bottom layer, or both may be impressed with stiffening ribs or channels, which serve also to resist relative movement between the plates and the material sandwiched between them. Specification 340,655 is referred to.
