Abstract

406,407. Electrolytic treatment of milk and other substances. SIEMENS & HALSKE AKT.-GES., Siemensstadt, Berlin.- (Assignees of Tillmans, J. ; 14, Ernst Ludwig Allee, Buchschlag, near Frankfort-on-Main, Hirsch, P.; 45, Heimatring, Frankfort, and Greve, E. ; Lowenapotheke, M÷lln, all in Germany.) Oct. 17, 1932, No. 28992. Convention date, Oct. 16, 1931. [Class 41.] Sodium chloride, hydrochloric acid and other inorganic compounds of sodium or chlorine or both are removed from milk by treatment in an electrodialysing apparatus in which the membrane or membranes are made of material permeable only to substances of low molecular weight, the milk being treated for a period sufficient only to allow substantially all the inorganic compounds of sodium or chlorine or both present therein to percolate through the membranes. In examples, whole and skimmed milk is treated in a 4 litre capacity triple cell apparatus, platinum gauze electrodes being placed in the two side chambers which are separated from the central chamber containing the milk by dialysing membranes of gold beater's skin parchment or silk cambric soaked in collodion or prepared with gelatine and formaline. A slow stream of tap water is passed through the two side chambers and the apparatus is placed in a cooling mixture in a vessel to prevent the temperature of the milk exceeding 18-20‹ C. A 120 volt direct current supply is connected to the electrodes. The period of treatment for whole milk is 120 minutes, and for skimmed milk 95 minutes. The Specification as open to inspection under Sect. 91 comprises also the treatment of cream, edible curds, soup condiments and similar foods and blood. This subject-matter does not appear in the Specification as accepted.
