[Class 38 (i).] A terminal such as a socket is formed with a projection enclosing a space to house sufficient solder for the connection of a wire to the terminal. The projection may take the form of a pair of spaced tags 3, Fig. 1, at the base of a socket 4. If the socket is formed from a blank as described in Specification 336,612, [Class 38 (i), Electric couplings &c.], the tags 11, Fig. 8, are formed on the blank 10 and bent down parallel to one another and the parts 10 are bent up and shaped to form the socket. In the case of a turned socket a reduced cylindrical projection at the base is either cut away by three milling cutters leaving the two parallel tags, or the projection may be hollow and have slots, holes, &c. in its wall. The terminals are then dipped in a solder bath, being conveyed by an automatic carrier. Where socket terminals are to be dipped, a carrier 17, Fig. 13, with solid or resilient plugs 19 to carry the sockets 23 rotates above a bath 22 of solder. After dipping, the sockets are cooled by an air blast from a nozzle 24 and are removed from the plugs 19 either by withdrawing the plugs or by a wedge-shaped fork 20. They may fall into a cooling and cleaning bath. The level of solder in the bath 22 is maintained by pellets or drops of solder fed automatically or by hand, or the height of the bath may be adjustable. A valveholder may have the ends of all its sockets dipped in one operation, either by an automatic carrier or by hand. Specification 352,102 is referred to.
