Abstract

Calcium, strontium, barium, and magnesium carbonates are purified or graded by dispersing the finely subdivided carbonate with a dilute aqueous dispersion of a gum, such as gum arabic or gum tragacanth, separating undeflocculated material, and recovering the carbonate from the suspension, as by film-drying, filtration, or flocculation by a neutral flocculating agent such as gelatine or glue. A carbonate on the alkaline side of neutrality may be obtained by using a gum dispersion containing a small proportion of an alkaline reagent such as an alkali hydrate, carbonate, or silicate. The presence of alkali silicate also assists the dispersion of difficulty suspensible carbonates such as certain native magnesites or native barium carbonate. Numerous examples are given, and in the Provisional Specification the effect of the presence of alum in the dispersion is exemplified. The products may be used as a base in paints, printing inks, or in the striking of colours, in leather dressing, in medicine, and in the manufacture of rubber; in the latter case the alkaline product combines the effects of a reinforcing agent and a filling material, an example showing the reinforcing properties of "dispersed whiting" being furnished.ALSO:Calcium, strontium, barium, or magnesium carbonate which has been purified or graded by dispersion with a dilute aqueous suspension of a gum and separation from undeflocculated matter by film-drying, filtration, or flocculation by gelatine or glue, is used in rubber mixes. A carbonate on the alkaline side of neutrality is obtained by using a gum dispersion containing a small proportion of an alkaline agent such as an alkali hydrate, carbonate, or silicate. The alkaline product combines the effects of a reinforcing agent and a filling material, an example showing the reinforcing properties of "dispersed whiting" being furnished.
