Abstract

450,733. Opaque paper; proofing permeable materials. BRITISH TITAN PRODUCTS CO., Ltd., Billingham, near Stockton-on-Tees. Aug. 31, 1935, No. 24382. Convention date, May 2. [Classes 96 and 140] Fibrous materials, such as paper and cardboard, of low transparency are produced by impregnating paper or cardboard with a suspension made by suspending a titanium pigment in an impregnating material such as hydrocarbons, e.g. paraffins, natural and synthetic waxes, gums and artificial plastic masses, in the presence of a small amount, e.g. 0À05 to 0À5 per cent, of a substance having an acid reaction. The titanium pigment may be pure titanium dioxide or the oxide mixed with or precipitated on extenders such as barium sulphate, or calcium, barium or lead titanates. Coloured titanium pigments may be used. Suitable substances having an acid reaction are higher fatty acids such as stearic acid and the acids of linseed oil, soya bean oil or peanut oil. Organic compounds which readily decompose to give acids products are also suitable. Pigments containing the acid-reacting substance may be made by dissolving a fatty acid in a volatile organic solvent, suspending a pigment in the solution and evaporating the solvent.
